Beer Ingredients – What do I need to make beer?

Home Brewing Ingredients comes down to 4 simple things that if by magic creates beer.

Only three are essential Home Brewing Ingredients, malted barley, yeast, and water but without hops, it will be sweet and dull as it gives beer balance and depth.

Water

An important ingredient as it constitutes roughly 90% of your finished beer.

Malt

What is Malt? Beer is brewed from malted barley. Malt comes from germinated cereal grains like Barley which is the preferred grain for many beer makers.

Beer is made by fermenting the sugars extracted from malted barley (mostly maltose) but other grains can be used like wheat, rye, oats, millet, rice and corn.

Malt is to beer, what grapes are to wine. The main ingredient from which we derive the sugars which are fermented to make beer.

Hops

What are Hops? Hops are the flowers of the climbing hop plant found growing wild across the countryside but now cultivated around the world.

Hops give a bitterness to the beer if used early in the brewing process, and aroma when added at the end.  Hops also as an added bonus act as a preservative, and extend the life of beer.

Yeast
